How Will the New Republican Government Impact New York State?

Everybody knows the results of the 2024 election are over, but their effects are long-lasting, with the Republican Party taking a major lead on all stages. On the state and local level, their impacts can be felt in many ways politically. Within the state and even at the city level, newly implemented Republican policies and ideas will shape not only political policies, but some aspects of daily life for New Yorkers. This Republican majority will affect state governance, and create room for important post-election changes for New York that most people, or at least New Yorkers, should be aware of.

With the election being over, Republicans now have the majority seat in the Senate and House of Representatives, along with Donald Trump being the president-elect. However, New York has historically been, and is still known to be, a Democratic (blue) state. Particularly, New York is known for its liberal stances on immigration and climate change, meaning a Republican-led government would push for policies that oppose New York’s leadership. Although there’s room for so much conflict, governor Kathy Hochul’s phone call with Trump after winning was seen to be productive, and she even said she would be “open to working with him”, according to the New York Times. In addition, New York has a decently large representation in the House, so there will be much political discussion between many important representatives.

For New York, economy, minorities and immigration are considered to be big issues within the government. Trump’s giving rights to minorities, specifically women and immigrants are especially notable. “Trump promised to bring down the price of groceries, however his economic policy of high tariffs will cause inflation and will lead to higher prices within the economy of New York City,” noted an anonymous junior at QHSS. “There may be more fear concerning women’s rights and the LGBTQ+ community. The city is pretty democratic and has protections, but with the new presidency these rights may not be assured.”

Trump has made his opinion extremely clear, saying he wants to “implement strict border measures…and kick off the detention and deportation of migrants at large scale” according to CNN. New York under the Biden administration has been a safe haven for immigrants, as they have poured into hotels and various sites, but now their situation is going to be uncertain as there will be a strong federal push against such movements, especially because New York has a massive immigrant population. In addition, with regards to funding and public facilities, the state may face challenges in securing funding for public healthcare and affordable public housing.

The voting itself in New York has been a continuation of historical election trends, as Kamala Harris won overall. New York has voted for the Democratic presidential candidate since 1988, so this comes as no surprise. It’s known for its liberal-leaning voters especially due to the diverse nature of New York City. And importantly, notes the anonymous student, “Politics swings from side to side, so there’s a high chance of seeing a Democratic president next cycle.”

As these changes gradually unfold, New Yorkers should be paying attention to a few things. New York’s new population of migrants and its related policies are going to play a key role here. Trump and the GOP took an extreme stance, making it difficult for local policymakers to make a change, demonstrating the division between the state and federal opinions. It’s also important to know that stances on healthcare and the public sector may change, as well as slight global warming issues that arise in New York State.

The new, Republican federal government will cause several issues and significant impacts on the New York state level in many ways. Although some may note the clash between state and federal leaders, one must also take into account the swinging tendencies of political outcomes, and the most important topics that Trump and the GOP will make policies on throughout his term.
