The 2025 season marks the second year of QHSS’s Badminton Girls Varsity Team. In 2024, the team started their first season strong, with a full roster of 25 athletes, one of QHSS’s largest varsity teams. They made an excellent debut, finishing the last season with 4 wins and 2 losses and ranking third out of the 5 highschools in the New Teams-Queens Division: East-West School of International Studies, Francis Lewis, Queens HS For Science @ York College, Beach Channel Educational Campus and Thomas Edison. QHSS will be competing against Grover Cleveland, Maspeth High School, and Metropolitan Campus in the Queens II Division this season.
Girls badminton is continuing to draw a significant amount of interest, as evidenced by the large turnout of nearly 50 student athletes. Two rounds of competitive tryouts at the York College Gymnasium took place on February 13th and 24th. After several trials aimed at assessing each individual’s skill, including shuttle control exercises and simulated match play, only 25 athletes can join the team in order to reduce distractions, explains Mr. Dima at the second round of tryouts. On February 25th, the day after tryouts concluded, results were announced on the QHSS Athletics Google Classroom, though the roster was only officialized on March 3rd. The official roster can now be found on the PSAL website. This year’s Girls Badminton team is led by Coach Mondestin, a large team of managers and senior co-captains Rianne Rodeo, playing first singles, and Kaitlyn Ye, playing first doubles.
The team is kicking off strong this year, earnestly hosting afterschool practicing sessions on Mondays and Fridays and it seems their hard work has paid off: QHSS Girls Badminton secured a victorious 5-0 success at the first first match of the 2025 season taking place on Tuesday March 18 against Grover Cleveland High School. There are three more matches in March, playing against Grover Cleveland High School, Maspeth High School, and Metropolitan Campus. The next match against Maspeth High School will be scheduled for Friday March 21. A total of 10 games have been scheduled, and you can find the schedule on the PSAL website. For those who are interested in showing support, the first match set to go down in the York College gymnasium is on Tuesday March 25 at 4:30 pm, playing against Metropolitan Campus.
