There is no team that better exemplifies the sportsmanship of QHSS than the Girl Bowling Team. The sport has always been an important part of school culture, ever since its founding back in 2002. And the team did not disappoint this year.
Their first win came at the start of season against Francis Lewis High School, with a score of two to one. Five more wins would come against Hillcrest, Jamaica, Forest Hills, Thomas Edison, and Young Women´s School for Leadership. These seven wins came in a short span of only a month as the bowling season lasts from September 26th to November 19th. Despite this short season, joining the team still requires a lot of dedication as it takes a lot of work to master the sport. The coach, Mr. Rivilli, says that for anyone who is looking to join, ¨make sure that you have enough to truly dedicate yourself to the team.” However, it is all worth it in the end, as this year, we had four girls qualify for the individual championship, one of which being Sophia Wong, a junior.
We were able to secure an exclusive interview with her about her experiences representing the team, where she opened up how her family and her dad encouraged her to keep practicing. She said that it was a deeply rewarding experience and encouraged anyone interested in bowling to join. Maybe even on the first day.
