Sigma Sorority Shines Bright this Women’s History Month

Founded in 2016, Sigma Sorority aims to empower all women and gender non-conforming individuals. The club has fostered a safe space and strong community amongst the members as they engaged in event-planning during their club meetings. The club’s determined efforts have helped to spread awareness and spotlight the contributions of women. Every week, Sigma Sorority hosted afterschool events that became huge successes. The club hosted its annual manicure and movie night, and collaborated with QHSS Craft Club to continue their Crafting With Kindness event.

As former members of Sigma Sorority, the writers can confidently say that they’ve enjoyed their time at the club.

For Joyce, one of her favorite memories of being at Sigma Sorority was decorating the school bathrooms. From creating and decorating cards with affirmations and pick-up lines to collecting sanitary and feminine products for the girls’ bathroom, Joyce felt that this club activity was one of the most unique activities held in school. Through this event, she bonded with the other club members and connected with a niche community.

In honor of Women’s History Month, Sigma Sorority hosted multiple events and workshops during class time, as well as launching their annual club hoodie. Sigma Sorority emphasizes strong community engagement, as the president strives to collect member opinions on all events and activities hosted. Specifically, the club always hosts meetings where major emphasis is placed on the annual club hoodie, as club members gather to discuss the theme, colors, and design of the club hoodie. The club agreed on having navy blue and pink as their color scheme, introducing a space theme with their notorious motto, “Empowering Women”

This month allows Club President, Amanda Seebalack, to present her club’s mission and values. She felt that Sigma Sorority is often overlooked for being a club exclusive to “girls” when they welcome all women and non-gender-conforming individuals. She aims to build Sigma Sorority into a space that “builds strength and support for young women.”

Throughout her two years as president of Sigma Sorority, Amanda has taken inspiration from many motivational women; one of which being Angela Merkel, former Chancellor of Germany. “Merkel inspires me with her ability to take on a leadership role, make a name for herself, and work hard in her field and job,” quotes Amanda. Like Angela Merkel, Amanda has used her confidence and leadership to bring a “positive presence in Sigma Sorority”

For Shimla, the club served to be a warm welcome into QHSS’s community as the club is made up of “girls girl”s—women who use their voice to lift each other up and listen to all voices. As a shy person herself, the club helped her to open up more and engage in conversation with people whom she had never met before.

Although the plethora of events that the club offers is a wonderful element—it’s just a bonus! The real beauty of the club lies within its members who join every Friday with an ambition to make a difference for women in the world. Whether it be through opening fundraisers, creating new friendships, or even mentoring younger girls, the club is one of the friendliest spaces on QHSS without prevail.
