The QHSS Girls’ Bowling Team has had a strong season this fall, kickstarting the season with three wins in the first two weeks. The latest face-off against Hillcrest High School—and the last match in the league schedule—was played at Jib Lanes and ended in a close score of 2-1. The team secured a decisive victory in the final C game, after an initial tie in the A and B games. With that final win, the season ended with six victories, playing Hillcrest, Forest Hills, Townsend Harris, Jamaica, and Francis Lewis. QHSS is ranked #4 in the Queens I Division for the 2024-2025 season.
Two players on the girls’ team qualified for the individual championships this year, including Sophia Wong, a player on the team since her sophomore year. As captain of the team, Sophia Wong represents QHSS with high scores, ranking in the individual statistics for the Queens I Division as #2 in terms of average and #1 in terms of highest scores. She remarks at the final match against Hillcrest, “We have surpassed my expectations a lot.”
Other members recount their experiences on the team:
“Before I joined I thought it was just a party sport. But honestly, it’s been really empowering.”
—Stephanie Bachan, senior, on the girls’ bowling A team, since her junior year
“It’s been great. Everyone is really friendly and supportive.”
—Ruby Lin, junior, on the girls’ bowling B team, since her sophomore year
“It has been absolutely phenomenal. I seriously can’t understand why I didn’t join sooner because it’s so much fun. I’m sad that the season is over already!”
—Maya Smalls, senior, a new member of thegirls’ bowling A team
The team currently has 16 active members and is guided by Head Coach Frank Rivilli. They are still recruiting and will accept any athletes who can make the commitment. They look forward to welcoming new players to the team. Members will hopefully keep building on their skills and continue to compete at a high level as the team prepares for the first game of playoffs at Melody Lanes next week.
