Every year QHSS hosts its annual career fair. However, this year was one of the largest so far with a variety of representatives from different professions, with a heavy emphasis on computer science. An earlier survey taken, revealed that it was the most popular profession at QHSS and the school wanted to highlight its increased course offerings for next year. Some of the notable faces, included Dr. Thitima Srivatanakul, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science. She gave a passionate speech about how “her passion for math started her interest in computer science”. She encourages all of the students interested in computer science to take the leap and pursue that passion. This is especially important for women, as there remains a gender gap in the computer science field.
For students who want hands-on adventures on the high seas, we had a visitor from a sailor of the Hudson River. Zoe Bisiani is a Marine Scientist at the DEP Bureau of Wastewater Treatment. She spends most of her on their state of the art boat, taking water samples. Her work is essentially to understand the change of our city and updating to an era of floods and storm surges. As she said, “Environmental Science is a very important topic and growing field with increased funding”. However, she did not start out in the STEM field. Bisiani went to LaGuardia for high school as a theater major, where she rubbed shoulders with famous names like Timothee Chalmate.
Some of our alumni that came to visit the school branched from the STEM Field. Jackie Alexis and Mahe Dewan both graduated from QHSS in 2013. Back then, the school was a very different place with little opportunities for students in creative fields. But yet, they preserved and Jackie is now a budding artist. Mahe had combined his passion for design and computer science to become a creative director. They were both overjoyed that the school has a new Drama Club and returned to see their performance. Such advice seemed appropriate for the school’s largest career to date
