Frights, Camera, Action: The Ultimate Guide to Halloween Classics

We’ve recently had our Halloween parade. From dressing up as characters from “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” to Disney princesses, we’ve got to see very fun and creative costumes. It’s clear that Halloween is a fun holiday, and it’s not fun without watching Halloween movies. So, if you love Halloween and love watching movies, here are some fun, spooky movies for you to watch:

Hocus Pocus

A teenage boy named Max and his little sister move to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century. Hocus Pocus was directed by Kenny Ortega who directed other notable movies like Descendents and High School Musical. This movie is a classic for a reason and gives us the nostalgic feeling we all know and love.

The Nightmare Before Christmas & The Corpse Bride

If you’re a fan of renowned animator and filmmaker Tim Burton, who directed Beetlejuice, Alice in Wonderland, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, these two movies are the ones for you. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Christmas movie but with a Halloween twist. Jack Skellington, the King of “HalloweenTown”, stumbled upon “Christmas Town” and schemes to take over the holiday. Another movie by Tim Burton is The Corpse Bride. It tells the story of Victor who gets dragged to the land of the dead by Emily who was murdered after eloping with her lover and wants to marry him. Victor must get back to ground to marry his fiancee Victoria before she gets married to someone else. If you like movies with an eerie, creepy atmosphere, then I suggest watching these movies.

Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice focuses on the Maitlands, a couple who died in a car accident, who unsuccessful attempt to scare away the Deetzes, a family that moved into the Maitlands’ home.  Their efforts attract Beetlejuice, a unique spirit whose help quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia. This movie is a musical comedy, so if you love musicals and love Halloween, I recommend viewing it.

Halloweentown

If you love old Disney classics like The Princess Diaries or Girl vs. Monster, Halloweentown is the perfect movie for you. It tells the story of Marnie and her siblings who get a big shock when they follow their grandma home to Halloweentown, a town where supernaturals can live normally – and find out they come from a family of witches. Despite the Halloween twist, this movie captures the  essence of a disney classic and is a perfect movie to watch with friends and family.

Scream

Picture this, it’s the night before Halloween and you’re popping some popcorn, when you receive a call from an ominous voice. You begin to have a conversation with this voice and he asks “What’s your favorite scary movie?” You might recognize this scene from viral social media sounds and videos. This is from a movie we all know or have at least heard about. “Scream” focuses on  teenager Sidney Prescott as she comes under attack from a mysterious character dubbed Ghostface while dealing with the anniversary of her mother’s murder. If you love a good thriller movie with suspense, this movie would be a good watch for you. For those of you who do end up watching Scream and want more just like it, don’t worry! There’s 7 movies in the franchise, each one more suspenseful than the last.

If you’re not a fan of horror movies yet still want to be in the Halloween mood, Scary Movie is the film for you. The movie is a parody of a mix of classic horror movies: “Scream,” “The Sixth Sense,” “The Matrix,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “The Blair Witch Project”. It mocks all the classic horror movie cliches. This is a movie I guarantee will make you laugh.
